Oracle Grid Control 11g - Installation procedures with snapshots

Last night i spent around 6 hours playing with Oracle Grid Control 11g, and i was successfully able to install and configure everything.

The installation process basically requires three steps in the following order:
1. Install Oracle RDMS 11g for the repository database
2. Install Oracle Weblogic Server
3. Install and configure Oracle Grid Control 11g

Installation of Oracle Weblogic server is now a prerequisite for the grid control 11g, unlike Grid control 10g which releied on Oracle application Server.

Below are the snapshots of the installation process: I am skipping the first step here for its a routine task of a DBA to perform.
Install Oracle Weblogic Server

Move to the staging area or a cdrom where the installation media is located and run the installation package.

Click Next to continue

Specify the Directory for the Middleware Home, and Click Next

Enter you email address, if you want to, else uncheck the box (ignore any warnings) and click Next.

Select the Typical installation type, and Click Next

Accept the default location for the weblogic server, and click Next

Review the Installation components, and Click Next

Make sure that you have enough space in the filesystem selected for the installation, because the Grid Control OMS and Agent home will later be created inside the Middleware home.

The installation beings and finishes relatively quickly.

Uncheck the Run Quickstart and click Done to finish the weblogic server installation.

Don't worry about the configuration of the weblogic server at this point for it will be taken care of by the configuration Assistants at the end of the Grid Control Installation.

Once we are done with the Installation of Weblogic server, we are all set to move forward and install the Grid Control 11g.

Install Grid Control 11g

Before beginning the installation make sure that the repository database is up and running, also start the listener and add the connection description of the datbase in the tnsnames.ora file.

Move to the staging area and start the installer

You can spcify your email address, or optionally uncheck the box and click Next.

Ignore the warning and click Yes

Skip the Software update, and click Next

Select the Install the new Enterprise Manager System

Ensure that all the prerequisite checks are succeeded before proceeding

Specify the Middleware home location that we specified during the Middleware installation

Specify the password for the weblogic admin, and for the Node manager

Specify the information about the repository database

If any warnings are given about the repository database, make sure that you make the necessary changes before proceeding

As a part of the configuration, the SYSMAn user is created which owns the OMS repository. Specify the password for the SYSMAN user. Also specify the location of the Management, Configuration, and IVM Diagnostics tablespaces. I believe that the IVM Diagnostic tablespace is the new requirement for 11g Grid Control

Specify the password for the agent registration. This password would be rquired while istalling additional stand alone agents on other servers.

Accept the default ports for the secure and unsecure http ports, and click Next. Optionally you can specify your own ports here.

Verify the information before proceeding

The installtion porcess continues and installs the OMS, Agent and Webtier in the the Middleware home

Towards the end of the installation run the allroot.sh script as root, from inside the OMS home

The configuration assistants will contine to configure the OMS and Agent. The configurations ran for more than 2 hours own my machine so ultimately i had to allocate more memory to my Virtual Machine.

During the Repository Configuration Sysman user is created and variuos objects will be created to hold the repository data. Query the objects in the Sysman schema and you will see the number increasing.

Once all the configurations are done, Close the Installer.

You may now login to the Weblogic Administartion Consloe, using the username and password specified during the installation.

You can now login to the Enterprise Manager by following the URL
